Wizyta Edwarda Gierka w Elblągu [fotografie]

8 grudnia 1972 – w elbląskim „Zamechu” po raz pierwszy swoją gospodarską wizytę złożył I Sekretarz KC PZPR Edward Gierek. W programie pobytu w Elblągu było spotkanie z aktywem PZPR i wizyta w Zamechu. Tego dnia Gierek udał się też do Nabrzeża, gdzie w ośrodku ćwiczeń LWP zapoznał się z problematyką przeciwpowodziową Żuław oraz możliwościami zagospodarowania Zalewu Wiślanego. Po tej wizycie w Elblągu zaczęto mówić o możliwości reaktywowania elbląskiego portu oraz osuszeniu części Zalewu lub usypaniu na nim grobli z szosą skracającą drogę do Krynicy Morskiej. Planów tych jednak nigdy nie zrealizowano. Gierek był pierwszym sekretarzem PZPR od grudnia 1970 do września 1980. W ciągu dziewięciu lat zbudowano tyle mieszkań, co w wolnej Polsce do 2008 roku. W czerwcu 1975 r. miała miejsce kolejna wizyta I sekretarza KC PZPR Edwarda Gierka w województwie elbląskim. Elbląg jako pierwsze z nowo utworzonych miast wojewódzkich gościł ówczesnego włodarza PRL. Na zdjęciach Edward Gierek na spotkaniu z elbląskimi pracownikami oraz włodarzami miasta (spacer po Starym Mieście w Elblągu).
